Panel Event: Why Get Involved in Politics?

Human flourishing and the need for greater political participation

Join us for refreshments from 5.30pm, with the panel beginning at 6:00pm.

Tickets: $25 ($15 for full 3-day STCPE ticket holders)

What does politics have to do with human flourishing? Why should Christians consider being more involved in politics? What would thoroughly gospel-shaped political participation even look like?

Join us as we reflect on the case for Christian participation in politics and public life with two prominent Christian thinkers.

Professor John Milbank is a theologian and philosopher who has influenced a whole generation of Christian thinking about politics and public life. Katelyn Beaty writes about evangelicalism and contemporary US politics and has recently published essays on this topic in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Vox, and Christianity Today.

The evening will be moderated by ADM CEO Dr Kate Harrison Brennan who was formerly an Advisor to Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

We will discuss the limits of left versus right politics, the unique opportunities and challenges facing Christians who want to engage in politics, a Christian understanding of service and public life, a Christian understanding of the goal of society and the purpose of political authority, the under-representation of women in politics, and the different political cultures of Australia, the UK, and the US. We will address a number of current issues while showing how politics is linked to larger theological questions.

This is a night for Christians passionate about politics and public life, as well as for Christians interested in what wise public engagement looks like in today’s culture. Everyone is welcome.
